Fitness goals, such as exercising more, eating better, or losing weight are consistently some of the most common New Year’s Resolutions. But since so many resolutions fail, how can you make them stick?
One of the first keys to sticking to a New Year’s Resolution is to set a realistic goal. Here’s how:
A goal needs to be tied to an internal desire. Spend some time thinking about what you want to achieve. Are you concerned about your health? Do you want to be more toned? Do you want to improve athletic performance?
We’ll use this as an example: Steve wants to get healthier so he can stop taking blood pressure medication.
Based on your answer from Step 1, think of specific ways to achieve your why. You may need to do some research. What type of workout is best for you? Would home workouts be a good option? Do you need to change your eating habits?
Lastly, you need to choose a goal. Goals should be measurable and actionable. Good goals often have two parts: the daily/weekly action and the end target.
For example, Steve’s end target is to stop taking blood pressure medication, so his weekly action is to exercise 45 minutes, 5 days a week.
Having an end target is important motivation, but it needs to be tied to a specific action. This is especially important when the end target isn’t directly in your control, like in Steve’s case.
Having an action that you can measure against daily will help keep you on track and keep your resolution top of mind. Only by taking action every day or every week will you actually achieve your 2019 fitness goals.
