Why Exercise Matters
Physical activity does two things: it improves blood flow which in turn gets more oxygen to the cells and gives you energy. It also releases feel-good hormones called endorphins. They provide you a sense of well-being that calms you down.
Experiencing the Runner’s High
Those endorphins are responsible for what is sometimes called the runner’s high. It’s a feeling of euphoria associated with cardiovascular exercise like running on your treadmill. When you workout, you reach a tipping point and, suddenly, all those worries go away. Afterward, the feel-good continues as the euphoria kicks in.
Cycling Meditation
It might be called the runner’s high but you get that same feeling with all types of cardio workouts. Running is high impact and not the right choice for everyone. The more practical option might be a spinning bike. Have your spin class at home, so you can work out when it is most convenient.
Along with the euphoria, exercises like this trigger a kind of meditation. It comes from focusing on the rhythmic movement. The petals going round and round as you push them, for example. You’ll get the same benefit from a rower or treadmill.
Getting Stronger
Anaerobic exercise will trigger the release of endorphins, so expect that runner’s high with strength training, as well. Growing stronger gives you a sense of accomplishment, too, especially as you start to feel stronger and look leaner.
Access is one of the most important avenues of any workout strategy and going to the gym is a major time commitment. When you have the equipment necessary to work out at home like a treadmill, elliptical or home gym for strength training, stress relief is there when you have had a bad day at work or you are feeling the strain that can come with caring for young children. It is your ticket to stress relief.
